Second Amputation - August 27, 2008 Print E-mail

We were more prepared for the second amputation but there is a whole emotional component that we all had to go through as a family. There is no going back once the choice is made.

But with all the horrendous experiences we had with the fixator, there was a certain amount of relief knowing that this would no longer be a part of our world.

Spencer was ready. Once again the surgery went long and I just wanted my son back. Once it was finally complete we could not wait to see him.

The recovery from the second amputation was nothing compared to the first. Spencer healed quickly and was back to his old self before we knew it. The phantom pains were gone. The heavy pain medication and the time sitting with him while he sweated and dealt with the Phantom pains were a thing of the past.

Before we knew it, he was finding new ways to get around with a sort of "side hop" that is remarkably fast. His stimps were healing and becoming tougher on the end so that he could eventually put weight on them.

Next stop? Robot Legs!
