Well the surgery is complete....damn that Spencer is full of surprises. They opened up his knee to begin the straightening and finally found out what was going on in there (his knees have been an ongoing mystery to all)
After looking at what was there, they decided that to continue with the surgery they had planned (releasing the soft tissue, strightening the leg, body cast etc) was not in the best interest of Spencer. They started to release some soft tissue but then stopped, closed up and now Spencer has a soft bandage on his knee. He will be all healed up in about 10-15 days.
So what did they find? Well it is easier to represent in a drawing. Take a look at this...please remember we are trying to represent something that is very Three dimensional in a two dimensional drawing. This is a recreation of the drawing that doctor mosely did for me:
Given this knee setup, even if they were to swing the lower leg around the full 90 degrees to make it stright, the shapes of the bones would not be able to come together into a functional and stable joint.
What does this mean? Well for the moment, we get our boy back just the way he is...which is just fine with both me and his Mom. Lots of other possibilities to discuss. He is doing great...same old Spence. I am SO PROUD of that little boy and how brave he was through all of this.
For the record, his platelets were 96,000 going into the surgery, they gave him one unit of platelets on top of that, and after the surgery he was at 86,000.
Spencer has been discharged and is at his Mom's house napping. They didn't even need to prescibe us any pain meds, he may be a little sore but that is all. He has an appointment to have his bandages taken off on April 20th. |
