I found some great posts I made on Spencer's original website that I just had to repost. They had me recall some amazing memories of the first two years of his life. These are all prior to any of his surgeries.
April 8th, 2002 Spence is doing great. He is in swim therapy and loves to kick in the water. He says "apple", "Momma", "dada", "uh-oh" and the incredibly cute "thank you!" He is 24 lbs and soon to turn 1 year old. A very big kid! On the 28th we are having a "Harry Potter" birthday party for him here in LA.
May 8th, 2002 My son is 1 year old! He had an amazing birthday party. We had Harry Potter stuff everywhere and his very Special Grandma Betty Borden made him a wizard's outfit that was beyond compare! It is Purple with stars and moons on it along with a Purple cape with a big "H" on it for Hawk! He also had a wand with a gold star on the end and a pointy wizard hat!
We put gold fabric on his high chair and, with the high collar of the cape, he kinda looked like Liberace! His Aunt Kathy came out from Vegas and his Grammy came all the way from Wyoming to be with him on his birthday! We had about 40 people show up and he was showered with all kinds of new toys and clothes! Thank you all for your generosity!
He also had his 6 month evaluation from his therapists. Spence has therapy every week with Jill, one of his favorite people. Amber and Terry are also therapists that visit him from time to time. He has also been swimming once a week with Heather who is awesome.
He has surpassed all of the goals that they set for him when they first started working with him. I am so proud! He is best at adapting. I call him "Spencer J Hawk...Super-genius!"
Health wise he has been great. He has had his share of bruises lately. He really does bruise easy. He is eating regular people food although we are still staying away from Dairy and Soy products. He always seems to have a bad reaction.
For his birthday we had a very special applesauce cake made for him at this Vegan bakery here in town. (it is LA, we have Vegan Bakerys) No Dairy, no Soy with a bunch of friut sauce type frosting (kinda like Jam) He dove into it and got it everywhere! I had to take a hose to the highchair!
September 25th. 2002
Spencer is talking up a storm. With about 20 words in his vocabulary. He says the following: Dada
Mama "tee" (tree) Kitty Dog Uh-oh Ball (he LOVES balls) Agua (his first spanish word) Nana (banana) Juice Eye "ose" (nose) Bottle
There are others that I am sure I am forgetting but they are all very cool as he has the sweetest voice. When he scrunches up his lips and says "juice" you are sure that no child has ever been this cute!
October 19th,2002 Spencer is doing great. He is now 18 months and a hell of a lot of fun. Not only are "balls" his favorite thing, but he has quite a throw on him. He holds smaller nerf balls up by his ear and then twists his body quick and wings them across the room!
He is still recovering from his first ear infection and a bout of broncitis. We had him on antibiotics and he is almost done with them. The nasty cough he had is gone, but we are completing the treatment plan.
And, (lucky us), he is also cutting a couple of molars on the bottom. This has him wake up at 4:00 am totally hyper and ready to play. Ugh. Jenn is working full time so I try to take care of him in a half dazed stupor at 4:00 am so that she can sleep.
He loves books and really digs the Teletubbies. Tons of fun to be with him. He always reminds me what is truly important in life.
November 14th 2002 Spencer has to be the most intelligent child on the Planet. Yesterday, I had a package of frozen peas in my hand and he came over and pointed to the picture on the front and said "peas" I smiled and said "yes those are peas" He then pointed to the package and looked me in the eye and said "they're inside"
He is 18 months old. In disbelief I asked him "where are the trees?" pointing at the window (he love trees) He looked at me and said "outside"
Spencer J. Hawk -- Super Genius
He loves to draw and I am going to scan some of his pictures in and post them up on the website. They are amazing.
He is still battling that damn broncitis. We had to take him into the Emergency room this last Sunday when he had a temperature of 103.7 - pretty scary. They gave him Motrin to bring his fever down. We put him back on antibiotics and are keeping him out of daycare for the week. Many of the kids are just passing the same crud around. He is doing much better and has not had any more fevers since.
Tons of people have been emailing me about the website! From Mississippi to South Dakota! It is always good to get feedback and know that the information here is making a difference in the world.
April 29th 2003 Spencer just turned 2 years old yesterday! Spence went to the Zoo and also paid a visit to the special olympics. There were a bunch of Firemen at the special olympics that fell in love with him and had him sit in the firetruck and made sure he had his own firehat to take home. |
